NBRC Board Exams
The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is the respiratory therapy profession's credentialing organization. By providing competency testing (board exams), they ensure each candidate is qualified for the credential they are looking to earn. As a new graduate, you want to earn the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials.
After a few years in your new career, you can take additional exams to earn additional credentials in specialty areas including:
- Adult Critical Care
- Neonatal/Pediatrics
- Pulmonary Function Technology
- Asthma Education
- Sleep Disorders.
Once you earn a credential, you must recertify through the NBRC Credential Maintenance Program every 5 years. This protects patient lives by ensuring quality in the respiratory therapy field. For more information, view the Credential Maintenance Program Brochure.

In Wisconsin (and most other states), you cannot legally practice as a Respiratory Therapist without credentials.
